Where do you most struggle to show up?

Hey courageous soul. It seems from the moment we clicked over into 2017, something shifted, collectively and personally. Have you felt it? The world felt more wobbly than usual and, with so much white noise externally and online, I lost my writing voice for a while.

In exploring my own resistance to showing up this year, it's led me to wonder if you too have been struggling to show up, and if so, what has that looked like for you?

Have you been feeling over-sensitive and overwhelmed by all that's going on in the world to the point you've shut down?

Are you avoiding letting the world see who you truly are?

Are you uncomfortable sharing your truth and your beliefs with others in case of ridicule or judgment?

Do you fear forging your own path will lead to so much change it might threaten your closest relationships? Not to mention the life you've worked so hard to create?

Are you scared of the unknown? Of failure? Of taking action without any guarantee of success?

Maybe you've been procrastinating, snagging yourself with brilliant justifications as to why you just can't possibly, under any circumstances ... unfortunately ... show up in the world.

Yeah, I get it. Me too. Who would have thought it would be so hard to continually show up?!

What's really interesting about wanting to show up, but holding back in fear, is you get caught in a kind of holding pattern that looks like business as usual on the outside, but is unbearably stifling on the inside.

Think of an aeroplane full of passengers eager to get to their destination, stuck on the runway, never quite taking off.

We tell ourselves it's okay, because it's safe on the runway; we're in control of our life here... or at the very least comfortable. Except if you've answered yes to the questions above, you're probably not that comfortable or in control. Because the effort to control the strong urge to take off, whilst simultaneously feeding your ego's fears by staying put, is exhausting.

The good thing is you're not alone in this struggle. So many of us are hearing the call to be true to ourselves, to forge our own paths, to make more meaningful choices in our lives and make a difference. And so many of us keep getting stuck trying to figure out the "how". After a while we question the validity of our own truth, doubting our own knowing, and talk ourselves out of it.

Because this inner call so many of us are receiving, and I suspect many more will experience in the years to come - this awakening to doing life differently, cannot be understood by the mind alone. That's what makes it so confusing! Because it comes from deep within and from a need in the world that you were born to respond to. Which means the call isn't just about you, even though it feels intensely personal.

A true call is the intersection between who you are and where you can be of service in the world.

At it's heart, the call to show up is about facilitating deeper connection and taking action. It's about breaking free of behaviour and beliefs that keep us blocked from real connection - to yourself, to others and to our world. And true connection cannot happen if you continue to press pause on your potential and your own truth.

And so the lesson I'm continuing to learn (because let's face it some lessons take longer than others to sink in...), is if you've been stuck on the runway for too long, take some action. Any action is better than more thinking, more questioning, more doubting, and definitely than more hiding.

If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.
